August marked six months of Community Eats!, our monthly dinner for area residents.
After the success of the 2025 summer meals program, we had been considering other ways to build community around shared meals throughout the year.
In March 2026, we decided to launch the Community Eats! initiative, with a plan to serve an evening meal from 5-7pm on the third Thursday of the month for three months. The meal would be completely free and open to everyone in the community. People could eat and enjoy each other’s company at SELCC, or they could get their meal to go.
The pilot program was met with widespread enthusiasm, so Community Eats! will now continue indefinitely.
“Connection is one of our organization’s primary values,” said Nicole McAlexander, executive director. “Bringing neighbors together to share a meal is a wonderful way to build stronger connections in our community.”
McAlexander went on to dispel a misconception. “You do not have to be a participant in our pantry program to join us. Community Eats! is for everyone!”
Community Eats! hosted an average of 80 people during the first three months, growing to today’s average of 221. The largest attendance was June’s old-fashioned cookout, which closed W Main Street in front of the Lisbon Public Library. Nearly 300 community members stopped by to enjoy grilled hamburgers, hot dogs, and other cookout classics.
With the exception of June’s grilled fare, our staff and volunteers prepare Community Eats! dishes in our commercial kitchen. As of August’s event, 47 volunteers have assisted with food preparation, serving, and cleanup, providing nearly 180 hours of service.
Funding for Community Eats! comes from SELCC’s general fund, and attendees are often surprised that donations are not accepted at the monthly events.
“Community Eats! is not a fundraiser,” said McAlexander. “It’s just an opportunity to gather around good food and make new connections.”
The next Community Eats! will be held on September 17 from 5-7pm. The menu includes lasagna two ways, garlic bread, a side salad, and dessert.
Donations to support Community Eats! and other SELCC programs are always welcome.
